Hanging sleeves

Method 1, Sew a Hanging Sleeve After the Quilt is Bound

Method 2, Add a Hanging Sleeve Before Binding the Quilt

You can sew a hanging sleeve to the top of the quilt at the same time you sew on the binding.

1. Sandwich the quilt top, batting and backing. Quilt or tie. Trim batting and backing to match the quilt top along the edge where the sleeve will be sewn.
2. Cut or piece together fabric to make a strip 9" tall and the same width as the quilt.
3. Fold under short edges 1/4", wrong sides together. Fold under again. Press. Sew a straight or zigzag seam to hem the folds.
4. Fold the strip lengthwise, wrong sides together, aligning raw edges.
5. Center the folded strip along the top edge of the quilt, against the backing, aligning its matched raw edges with the edge of the quilt.
6. Sew the sleeve to the quilt with an approximate 1/8" seam allowance.
7. Bind the quilt. If you plan to use the tucked method to end doublefold binding, start binding on a side without the sleeve to help avoid bulk from extra layers of fabric.
8. Finish the sleeve using Steps 6 through 8 on page 1.

Quilt Sleeve Options

• You can use any fabric for the quilt sleeve, from plain muslin to something that enhances the reverse side of your quilt.
• Quilt shows usually require a 4" minimum sleeve. Read show rules before assembling the sleeve for your quilt.
• Use wide backing fabric to make a long sleeve without piecing strips of fabric. Use the same fabric you back the quilt with to make the sleeve blend with the backing.

On the road again

Hand work till its my turn to drive, and a little closer quarters this trip.

We took my truck this time because the gas millage is better.

Hand work challenge

Bonnie Hunter is having an hour a day challenge, and here is my hand work project.  Just a little old quilt of bright squares.  

 
Really,   Ok so maybe not so little.  But I like it and I have a spare room with a bed and no quilt for it.   So until I win the lotto or we can stop supplementing our kids live, its hand quilt my tops or tie them. 

And I’m not ready to tie these quilts.

So for now I sit and quilt – good thing I like to be warm because in the summer my husband cranks up the air and in the winter I have him stoke the fire.  My little corner of peace and quite  (never mind that thread on the chair…)

A nice weekend, just too short

Going home is bitter sweet..., I love to be home ~ just wish it was closer to the kids !

My Memorial Day Project

This was the project I worked on this weekend.  As my daughter would say – its not my usual style.  But I kinda like it!

I had about half the brights and a little more than half the muslin strips.  So I guess it helped get rid of the stash. 

I did go out an buy a little more brights.  So I would really call it a wash.  :p

I finally finished my Smokey Mountain Stars from Bonnie Hunters site.  You can find the free pattern here at Quiltville.com.

Even the back is Patriotic – scraps to fill in the back instead of another length of backing. All those scraps from thrift store shirts.

   

I work best under pressure

Its DONE and on its way to MN.  Cydnee turns 1 in a few weeks and it will be there for her.

Another Bonnie Mystery done…

Last year Bonnie Hunter’s Mystery was Roll Roll Cotton Boll.  I finished my last week.  It took this long to get help taking a photo, but here it is….

March Block of the Month

 

I have been doing these blocks since January.  My thought – blue and white with a little yellow/gold while  trying to use up some of my shirting and strips.

While in a Chicago Dr’s office I saw this on the table.  Pretty!!!

 

And it turned out really interesting.  I read the entire pamphlet – and I believe this should be required reading for everyone I know!

Swap blocks due in Sept

and I’m half way done.  Well I need to sign them all, but 33 of the needed 60 are together.  And

about 10 more are cut and ready sew.
